UNESCO-listed 17th-century slave castle on the Cape Coast waterfront, with guided tours of the dungeons, the Door of No Return and a museum on the transatlantic slave trade.
What is Cape Coast Castle?
Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty slave castles and forts built on the Gold Coast, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Swedish began it in 1653 for timber and gold; the British took it over and used it as the administrative centre of the Gold Coast until 1877. The guided tour walks through the male and female dungeons, the governor's quarters, the cells for rebellious prisoners and the Door of No Return opening onto the Atlantic.
There is also a museum on the slave trade and regional history. The tour is powerful and sobering; guides pitch it differently for children, and most operators suggest preparing under-sevens for the emotional content or splitting the group. Entry includes the guided tour.
Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and preserves the history of the transatlantic slave trade.
