What is Fort Jesus?

Fort Jesus is the stone fort begun by the Portuguese in 1593 on the southeast corner of Mombasa Island, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its heavy walls, bastions and dry moat were built to control trade at the port, and it changed hands repeatedly between Portuguese, Omani and British forces.

Inside are museum galleries, cannons, courtyards and a famous carved door, with views over the Old Town and harbour. It is a substantial, hot walk with uneven stone underfoot.

Fort Jesus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for its Portuguese military architecture and its role in the trade history of the Indian Ocean.

Enter through the main gate, walk the courtyard and ramparts, then work through the museum galleries at your own pace. Guides are available at the gate and add context to the Omani and Portuguese history.

Stone floors, stairs and direct sun make it tiring for small children; carry water and go early.
