What is Kakamega Forest?
Kakamega Forest is Kenya's only tropical rainforest, with more than 400 bird species, seven primate species and many butterflies. It is split between two managers: the Kenya Wildlife Service runs the northern National Reserve through the Buyangu gate, about 12 to 15 km north of Kakamega town, and the Kenya Forest Service runs the southern Isecheno side.
Walks are with a local guide, from short forest walks to full-day trips, plus sunrise and sunset walks to Lirhanda Hill, night walks and trips to Isiukhu Falls and Buyangu Hill. Fees differ by gate and are reported differently across sources, and KWS fees may need M-Pesa or eCitizen.
