Photo: Auto-generated feature card

A deep highland lake in south-west Uganda with 29 islands, terraced hills, canoe hire, boat trips and an island zipline.

πŸ“ Location
Lake Bunyonyi, Kabale District, about 400 km south-west of Kampala, Kabale, Kabale

What is Lake Bunyonyi?

Lake Bunyonyi lies at about 1,900 metres in Kabale District, roughly 400 km from Kampala, and is often described as Africa's deepest lake, with 29 islands scattered across its water. The surrounding hills are terraced with sorghum, millet and beans, and the shoreline is dotted with small lodges and fishing villages.

Families come for canoeing, boat trips between the islands, swimming in the sheltered bays and the island high-ropes and zipline course. It is a gentle, scenic stop that pairs naturally with gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Mgahinga, and the altitude keeps the temperature comfortable.

The lake supports fishing communities and the terraced hills are farmed by smallholders; tourism provides an alternative income.

πŸ’‘ Money-saving tips for families

  • Check bilharzia advice Ask the lodge before swimming
  • Canoe with a guide The lake is deep and the islands are easy to get lost among
  • Combine with Bwindi Bunyonyi is a natural rest day after gorilla trekking
