What is Meru Museum?

Meru Museum is run by National Museums of Kenya in a seven-room house built in 1916 that once served as the District Commissioner's residence, in the middle of Meru town near the county assembly. It opened in 1974 and shows the culture of the Ameru people, with traditional clothing, tools and weapons, prehistoric stone tools, a natural gallery, and the Njuri Ncheke council of elders' story.

The grounds have a snake park with a spitting cobra and rock python, crocodiles, monkeys and tortoises, a garden of indigenous medicinal plants and a compound of traditional huts. Guides explain the exhibits.
