What is Mpanga Central Forest Reserve?

Mpanga Central Forest Reserve is a 453-hectare block of natural equatorial rainforest in Mpigi District, roughly 37 km south-west of Kampala on the Masaka highway. It is managed by the National Forestry Authority and protects old mahogany and other hardwood trees, along with butterflies, birds, monkeys and small antelope.

A network of shaded trails runs through the forest, and a guided walk is included in the entry fee. It is a manageable half-day trip from Kampala and one of the easiest places to introduce children to a real rainforest without travelling to the west. Basic accommodation and camping are available on site.

The reserve protects a remnant of Uganda's original equatorial forest and is managed by the National Forestry Authority for conservation and education.
