Three waterfalls on the Sipi River on the slopes of Mount Elgon, reached on guided hikes through terraced farmland and forest.
What is Sipi Falls?
Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls on the Sipi River, on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon in Kapchorwa District, about 280 km east of Kampala. The main fall drops about 100 metres over a cliff, with two smaller falls upstream, and the surrounding hills are covered in terraced farmland, banana groves and forest.
Guided hikes range from a short walk to the main viewpoint to a full-day circuit of all three falls, and the Sipi area is also known for coffee tours and abseiling. Children aged six and over can join the shorter hikes, and under-fives are free, making it a good family trekking option.
The Sipi River flows from Mount Elgon, one of East Africa's most important water catchments, and the falls are managed with the local community.
