What is Uganda Equator (Kayabwe)?

The Uganda Equator crossing at Kayabwe, in Mpigi District about 75 km from Kampala, is marked by two painted circles on the tarmac and a cluster of craft stalls and photograph points. It is the most popular Equator stop in Uganda and sits directly on the road to Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.

The attraction is the Coriolis demonstration: a vendor pours water into a basin with a hole and shows it draining clockwise on one side of the line and anticlockwise on the other. It takes about 15 minutes and is genuinely engaging for children. The craft stalls sell baskets, carvings and Uganda-themed souvenirs.

The Equator marker is a geographic landmark rather than a conservation site, but the stop supports local craft traders.
