Gatagara is a genuine artisan experience that children find fascinating. The potters are skilled and welcoming, and trying the wheel is messy fun. Expect a simple workshop setting and a hands-on session rather than a polished visitor centre.

What is Gatagara Pottery Workshop?

Gatagara Pottery is Rwanda’s first modern ceramics workshop, founded in 1977 and still run by a cooperative of artisans. Visitors can watch potters at work, learn about traditional techniques, and try throwing clay on a wheel. The workshop is a short drive from the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza and makes a creative add-on for families exploring southern Rwanda. Children aged 5 and up enjoy the tactile experience of working with clay.

Supports a historic artisan cooperative and local craft heritage.
