What is Menengai Crater?

Menengai is a huge dormant volcano with a caldera about 12 by 8 km and roughly 480 m deep, making it the second largest caldera in Africa after Ngorongoro. It lies about 9 to 10 km north of Nakuru town and about 180 km from Nairobi. A drive or boda boda ride from town reaches the rim viewpoint at around 2,278 m, where you look over the lava-covered caldera floor and back to Lake Nakuru.

A rough rim track takes 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace and has no fences, so stay close to children. Local guides can lead rim walks, caves and hikes into the crater. Facilities are basic, and the crater is sacred to nearby communities.
